How a shilling travels

Giving you can follow all the way to the receipt

You are not in the room where the need was announced, so MyUmmah does the checking for you. Nothing here is a promise about intentions. It is what the platform refuses to do until a document is on file.

Step one, the campaign

One need, not a general appeal

Feed the students for a term. Clear the electricity bill. Sink a well. A campaign names the thing it is for and what it costs, so there is something definite to hold it to afterwards.

  • What the money is for, in one line
  • A real figure, set before collection starts
  • The institution asking, named on the page

Step two, verification

Checked before a single shilling moves

We ring the number, look at the photographs of the place and the people, and check the payout account against the name we verified. An organisation is paid into its own account, never an officer's. Registration papers strengthen the case where they exist.

  • Registration verified against URSB, the NGO Bureau or UMSC
  • Imam, treasurer and chairman all on record
  • Payout account in the institution's name, never a person's

Step three, release

The money leaves in stages

A funded campaign is not handed over in one lump. A first tranche is released so work can start, and the rest waits behind it. An institution's very first payout is held and reviewed by a person before it goes anywhere.

In tranches

Never one unaccountable lump sum

First payout held

Reviewed by a person, not a script

Step four, proof of use

No receipts, no more money

Before the next tranche moves, the institution submits receipts and photographs for the money it has already spent, and our team checks them. Miss the window and the campaign is publicly marked as awaiting proof, on its own page, where anyone can see it.

What proof of use looks like

A receipt, not a reassurance

Before the next release moves, the institution files what it actually spent. Our team checks it against the tranche. These are the kinds of document that come back.

A handwritten shop receipt for sugar, rice, cooking oil and soap totalling 23,000 shillings, marked paid, beside the banknotes used
Food bought for a term, itemised and marked paid. The total has to reconcile with the tranche that was released.
A Yaka prepaid electricity payment receipt showing the meter number, the units bought and the total paid
An electricity token against the meter the campaign named. The meter number is the part that makes it checkable.

Now go and find someone to help

Every campaign collecting on MyUmmah has been through all four of these steps.
